Reader Ministry

*** Safe Environment Certification for Employees and Adult Volunteers is REQUIRED PRIOR TO VOLUNTEERING/ SERVING in Ministry ***

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA CATHOLIC CHURCH READER MINISTRY

The reader serves the Eucharistic assembly – the people God has gathered to hear His Word – by telling the story of God’s saving work in the lives of His people. These stories, told for generations, reinforce our identity as members of the community of God.

In our hearts we know that these stories, while based on history and tradition, are in a mysterious way about our own existence, our own time, our relationships, and about us. The role of the reader is to TELL the TRUTH about the STORY so that God’s people are touched. We will be reminded of what God has done for us in the past and will continue to do for us. We will be filled with faith, and will be ready to celebrate Eucharist.

On the weekend that they are scheduled, readers are required to participate in the reader preparation program, a prayer and study session held every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. In these sessions, the readers support each other in telling the whole-hearted story so that God’s Word is heard, remembered, identified with, and lived in our lives. Training is held only sporadically during the year. Please identify yourself as interested to the church office, the ministry fair, or to the facilitator below.

St. Catherine of Siena

A soul rises up, restless with tremendous desire for God's honor and the salvation of souls. St. Catherine dedicated her life to serving those in need. She served as a nurse in homes and hospitals, and looked out for the destitute. She spread her knowledge and love of God through her work and her writings. At the age of seven we are told that St. Catherine vowed her virginity to God. At eighteen, she received the Dominican habit. She then began to live in solitude and silence in her room, going out only for mass. But somewhere, somehow, in this silence she learned to read. This silence ended in 1368 in her "mystical espousal" to Christ, after which she suddenly rejoined her family at home and gave herself to the service of the poor and sick.
