The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

There is no cost for the sacramental preparation. Cost of materials may be low or null.

This Ministry is the process by which an adult becomes Catholic. This may include being baptized for the first time or joining the Catholic Church as a baptized person from another Christian faith. It also can include adults who were baptized Catholic but have never received Catholic instruction and have been away from the church, and therefore need to celebrate First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

The process involves an Inquiry time, in which general questions are answered, and a formal period of instruction, called the Catechumenate, as well as more specific times at certain seasons. Interviews of those interested in joining the inquiry period can take place at any time. Classes are year-round, except holidays, so you may begin at any time on Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:15 pm. Depending on an individual’s background, the normal time frame to join the Catholic Church is about 1 1/2 to 2 years. The process is offered on “readiness” rather than on a set-time. This is assessed by the candidate or catechumen, the catechists and the director of sacramental catechesis.

St. Catherine of Siena

A soul rises up, restless with tremendous desire for God's honor and the salvation of souls. St. Catherine dedicated her life to serving those in need. She served as a nurse in homes and hospitals, and looked out for the destitute. She spread her knowledge and love of God through her work and her writings. At the age of seven we are told that St. Catherine vowed her virginity to God. At eighteen, she received the Dominican habit. She then began to live in solitude and silence in her room, going out only for mass. But somewhere, somehow, in this silence she learned to read. This silence ended in 1368 in her "mystical espousal" to Christ, after which she suddenly rejoined her family at home and gave herself to the service of the poor and sick.
